Well, the summary sounded great. The first and second chapter were good. The rest degenerated into gibberish.

The characters were introduced with a specific personality giving the reader expectations of how he/she will react. As the story progressed, the characters significantly swayed from the norm.

Writing style changed drastically; I felt like I was helping to peer review one of my fellow high-school freshman's English essay (if I could circle and notate the grammatical errors and improper usage I would).

The ending was lacking and left dozens of loose ends.

I would not recommend this story unless it went through a revision.

I thought this was a solid start to what will hopefully be a series. It takes a little bit for the story to get going. The dystopian urban fantasy setting takes a little to set up. The mage and fae are quite unique too. It's an interesting story and isn't as predictable as you might think. At the end I see some real potential for this series.
There is a reason Wiccans call the directional elements in service, they are powerful. To read of the elements personified is such a treat. I can't wait to read the next installment of the war between human and magic..
Well, I’ve been sucked into another magical tail/love story. This genre seems to be very popular with all forms of magic. I do enjoy this story as an easy read and fun to pass the time. As this is only book 1 I’m hoping for more character development and the story line delving deeper into a better story.
I wanted to like this book. I really, really wanted to. The bones of the story are engaging. However, there is a large however (sic).
Being that "being that" was constantly used when "because" or "since" or "instead" would have flowed better, been more grammatically correct, and less jarring, I was constantly thrown out of the willingness to suspend disbelief. Being that "being that" (sic) seemed to be used about every fifth paragraph, I just couldn't do it. A good copy editor and this is an excellent story.
Three stars is actually a little generous for this book in its current form. The story is a rough gem in desperate need of polishing. Unfortunately it reads like a first draft, complete with author's notes and continuity errors. I have never said this about a published book, but I really wish the author would revise and re-release it. The plot is intriguing but needs fine tuning, the characters are solid but need fleshing out; the story is there and could genuinely be a five star worthy blockbuster. In my mind, that makes it all the more tragic that it was published in its current, and in my opinion unfinished, form.

I can only hope that as the series continues, Provost will polish and refine her work so that the brilliance of her story and the beauty of her characters can be appreciated as they should be.
This book is by a very young and inexperienced writer. It is highly derivative of myths and Celtic legend but, sadly, in the writing, the author has drained the story of all wonder and mystery. She appears to have the romantic concerns of a fourteen-year-old. There is nothing about the protagonist that would explain why a wildly handsome and princely elf would fall in love, but oh fall in love, he does! Wondrously and ardently--just the way the youngest teenage girls imagine it is supposed to happen. He doesn't even know that the Copper girl's mother is queen of the fae--a housewifely stereotype that has nothing to do with the mysterious and amoral fey that anyone who has studied Celtic myths has encountered. The book is embarrassingly bad. I suppose it could be fun for a twelve-year-old, but I question the judgment of anyone over that who liked the book. The author has created a dystopic world right out of morning TV--cartoons, maybe? I would have been delighted to receive a sample of this book from one my seventh graders since it shows a certain native talent with wielding the pen. Had a tenth grader turned it in, however, I would have shaken my head and lifted my eyebrows. Really? Grow up and then write!
The story was new and fascinating. This could have been a terrific series, I want it to be a terrific series I want to follow these characters and see what they have to say. But the writing was painful the writing doesn't capture you and transport you to their world. The writing is juvenile and lacking the great story telling ability. Maybe someday Jennifer Allis Provost will develop into a better story teller and come back and re tell this book to its great potential.
